Uneven skin texture is the consequence of excess dead skin cells built upon the surface of the skin. As we age, collagen production decreases, causing skin cells to lose their ability to retain a smooth texture, firmness, and moisture. Our late 30s come with hormonal changes that begin to affect the skin, and these changes become worse with menopause.

Acne scarring is another contributing factor to uneven skin texture. These scars cause visible marks. Dryness is another common cause and comes with an insufficient supply of oils and lipids. These materials help lubricate the skin and keep its moisture barrier intact. When your skin does not have enough moisture, it becomes harder to turn over and adequately shed dead skin cells. Over time, it can cause the cells to build up, and the skin’s surface will appear rough, flaky, and dull.

What can help uneven skin texture?

  • Exfoliating a few times a week to remove dead skin cells
  • Using oil-based products to help regulate sebum production
  • Use vitamin C for hyperpigmentation
  • Apply sunscreen every day to prevent sun spots and enlarged pores
  • Try treatments that help boost collagen production
