Vaser Smooth for Cellulite
Cellulite is an extremely common problem that affects over 75% of women to some degree. Permanent cellulite removal has not been possible until the recent invention of such technologies as Vasersmooth and Cellulaze.
Cellulite is caused by bands of fibrous tissue that pull down the skin as women age. In a normal teenager, there are numerous bands of collagen that hold the skin to the muscle underneath. These bands of tissue contract in some areas over time leading to dents in the skin or cellulite. The greater the contraction of the band, the deeper and worse the cellulite is.
Vasersmooth and Cellulaze both work by cleaving the bands under the skin, using a minimally invasive technique under local anesthesia. First we mark the cellulite and then we numb the skin. Next we make a tiny incision and find the bands one by one. Next we use the Vasersmooth or Cellulaze device to permanently cleave the bands, releasing them and permanently improving the cellulite.
There are 2 major advantages to Vasersmooth over Cellulaze. The Vasersmooth device is much faster, markedly shortening the length of your procedure and making it possible to sever and treat many more bands in a given session. A typical Vasersmooth session takes about 1 hour while the same Cellulaze session may take 3 to 4 hours. Secondly, sometimes there is permanent fat loss in the divots created by the bands due to fat destruction by from the pressure of the skin being pulled down against the fat. When the bands are released, the skin may not spring all the back and some of the divot may still remain. The Vaser probe that comes with the Vasersmooth device also allows us to melt some nearby fat and transfer it to the divot to fill it in. This fat transfer is not possible using Cellulaze. Therefore results in areas treated in patients with stubborn divots will likely be much better using Vasersmooth. We have even completely removed deepest buttocks dents caused by cortisone injections using Vaser and Vasersmooth devices.
Ask the Doctor
Patient: Is there anything out there anything new out there for treating this ugly cellulite?
Dr Riopelle: Yes in fact there are many technologies that work for cellulite. Some cause only temporary reduction such as endermology and require weekly to monthly treatments. Others last much longer such as Thermage.
There is a new one however which shows amazing promise. It’s called Vasersmooth from Solta, the same company that brought us Fraxel, Thermage, and Vaser.
This treatment is very unique. It is minimally invasive so it works under the skin to actually break the bands that cause cellulite.
What most people don’t realize is that cellulite is not caused by excessive fat. It is actually caused by tightening of the fibrous bands that hold the skin to the muscle. These bands tighten with time causing divots. The greater the tightening the greater the divots.
Vasersmooth using ultrasonic energy applied directly to the bands to break them, releasing the dents and smoothing the skin. We simply map out the divots, numb the skin with tumescent numbing fluid, then apply the special ultrasonic probe to the band, and “pop” the band is released.
Patient: But don’t we need those bands to hold our skin up?
Dr Riopelle: Good question. No. In fact the skin on the legs for example has thousands of those tiny bands, so we release just the ones that have contracted down. There are still thousands left that are normal.
Patient: How long does the treatment last?
Dr Riopelle: The treatment is considered permanent as the bands are permanently released. It fact it can last years, but over time new bands may tighten down, causing new cellulite. It takes a long time to develop significant cellulite in the first place so presumably it will take years to develop some new tight bands.
